Welcome to our latest handy five-minute Sunday roundup capturing what’s been happening in West Leeds during the past week.
We’ve covered night-flying at Leeds Bradford Airport, a Pudsey councillor deciding to stand down, latest planning applications, community events and town centre parking charges – amongst many other things.
Here’s a quick look at what’s been happening in West Leeds in the past week:
Armley
Council chiefs will form a ‘problem solving group’ of different council departments after Armley residents called for a ‘proper investigation’ into problems with parking and traffic near a busy business park.
Road safety concerns have seen the council block the installation of a 5G mobile phone mast in Armley Ridge Road.
Check out our report on how physio sessions are transforming youngsters’ lives at Armley Leisure Centre.
This looked a lovely community initiative – during the course of an afternoon over 50 residents, supporters and friends visited the City Mission for a sunny lake summer’s afternoon social event.
And New Wortley-based Leeds Baby Bank this week launched an urgent appeal for donations as the charity struggles to meet record demand for its services.
Bramley
Judging by readers’ reactions, it’s long overdue that this busy Bramley road is set for resurfacing.
Bramley Baths is inviting deaf and hard-of-hearing families to a special British Sign Language Splash session today (Sunday, 27 September), as part of International Week of Deaf People.
Calverley
The candidates for next month’s Calverley & Farsley Ward by-election have been announced.
Farnley
The Lancasterian School Room hosted an informative and entertaining Heritage Open Day event earlier this week. Check out the report from the event here.
Farsley
Following the resignation of Peter Carlill, the candidates for next month’s Calverley & Farsley Ward by-election have been announced.
Oh dear. FC Farsley’s five-match league and cup winning streak came to an end as they surrendered a three-goal lead to lose 5-3 at home to Pro Elite Bradford United.
Horsforth
It’s been another newsy week in Horsforth with some big issues covered by WLD.
Jill Stocks compiled a 2,300-word report on the latest local reaction to airport night flight plans. Needless to say the topic continues to divide opinion, particularly among those most affected by the proposals in Horsforth and Kirkstall.
Financial advisers Bartlett Group wants to expand its Broadway Hall headquarters by building a new office block in the area currently occupied by seven houses empty off Bank Avenue. We’ve got the full report here.
Plans for a double-sided digital free advertisement display off a busy Horsforth road would result in ‘unwanted clutter’, council planners have said. As a result, they’ve refused the application.
We’ve also got the latest on Horsforth Town Council’s stance on the Leeds City Council parking charges review at Fink Hill car park.
A much-loved face will be missing from the streets of Horsforth as PCSO Julie Richardson leaves her role for a new chapter of her story. And Horsforth Green Festival took place in the sunshine with music, community, and sustainability at the heart of this free family-friendly event – we’ve got photos and a short report here.
Kirkstall
As we mentioned above, Jill Stocks compiled a 2,300-word report on the latest local reaction to airport night flight plans. Needless to say the topic continues to divide opinion, particularly among those most affected by the proposals in Horsforth and Kirkstall. The Friends of Kirkstall Abbey Park group has also had its say.
Pudsey
This has been rumoured for a while now, but this week Reform Councillor Trish Smith confirmed she will be standing down at next May’s local elections.
A story that continues to rumble on and be of huge interest to townsfolk is the future of Pudsey Town Hall. The building’s new owner has pledged to ‘carefully consider’ the historic building’s future.
In lighter news, a Pudsey woman has turned her experience of autism and ADHD into stand-up comedy – and has made it to a national talent show final. And Pudsey-headquartered G&H – which does so much to support local young people – has bolstered its team with the addition of eight new apprentices.
As part of Heritage Open Days 2026 and in keeping with the theme of “Everyday Histories”, St Andrew’s Methodist Church in Pudsey hosted an exhibition that told the story through wool of John Wesley, founder of the Methodist movement.
Pudsey Thai boxer Jamie Ayres is “relishing the sweet taste of winning” following his victory on the Manchester Hitman show Yokkao 52.
Leeds CCTV chiefs have agreed to provide clearer information about how cameras are used on ‘outer’ West Leeds and whether they are effective. Check out our report from the Outer West Community Committee.
Wortley
We covered news of some new fencing to help protect Western Flatts Cliff Park in Wortley after councillors agreed to fund the improvements.
