Leeds Baby Bank today launched an urgent appeal for donations as the charity struggles to meet record demand for its services.
The charity, based off Wellington Road in New Wortley, gifts baby-essentials to families in poverty. It has seen costs rocket in recent months, while being asked to support more families than ever before.
Chantal Nogbou, who founded the charity nine years ago when she experienced homelessness as a single mum, has never known a time like this.
She said: “Since the start of June, we have been asked to help an unprecedented 550 families in Leeds. We only accept families referred to us by health and social care professionals, so we know every family is in genuine need – often in crisis.
“At the same time, we face higher costs than ever before to rent our warehouse and heat it for our small team and lovely volunteers.”
One of the items most needed is a pram or a pushchair. The charity explained that without one families can find themselves isolated, often in poor quality housing, perhaps a refuge or a hostel. They may be unable to meet family and friends, while mums and newborns may not access the healthcare and support they need.
