Welcome to our latest handy five-minute Sunday roundup capturing what’s been happening in West Leeds during the past week.
It’s been a slightly abbreviated week as our editor was away for a short break, but there’s still been lots going on.

Here’s a quick look at what’s been happening in West Leeds in the past week:
Armley
Photographer Kelvin Wakefield captured some unusual photos of Gott’s Park Mansion when he visited as part of a Heritage Open Day event. See the photos for yourself here. Speaking of open days, Iola Shaw visited Leeds Industrial Museum in Armley. Read more on the every day histories captured there.
And drug and alcohol Forward Leeds – which has a base in Armley – has wowed inspectors by maintaining its outstanding status after the latest inspection by the Care Quality Commission.
Those who enjoy seeing local boxers display their skills and progress in the sport are well served in West Leeds – as shown by the latest Jamal Promotions show held at the White Rose Banqueting Suite on Tong Road, Armley.
Bramley
Councillors are set to decide whether to grant a premises licence for a new mini market and off licence at a building formerly occupied by William Hill Bookies in Bramley. The application has received a dozen objections by residents.
The historic Baths have been in the news again this week. They are launching an exciting new programme of events this autumn, bringing a diverse mix of cultural, heritage and wellbeing experiences to one of Leeds’s most unique venues – check out the details here. And as part of Heritage Open Days, the Baths organised a guided walk to discover places associated with the prominent suffragette Mary Gawthorpe. Community reporter Jane Knowles went along.
A group of art enthusiasts gathered at the orchard in St Peter’s Churchyard in Bramley for a loose watercolours workshop led by Grace Hills. Jane Knowles joined them.

Calverley
Grassroots sport in West Leeds has been given a champion boost with the opening of a multi-million pound community football facility – read more about the fantastic Woodhall Sports Hub.
Farsley
This is a long-running story we contuse to follow: Councillors say revised plans for 25 local authority homes in Farsley have improved from the initial proposals – but have warned the council must still listen to local concerns.
And FC Farsley made it five wins on the bounce in their cup win against Stanningley Old Boys at the swanky aforementioned Woodhall Sports Hub.
Horsforth
It’s been another busy week in Horsforth!
The town council has again waded in on the controversial subject of parking charges at Fink Hill. They’re urging Leeds City Council to ditch them.
Horsforth’s banking hub could also be set for a new home – in the former Morrisons cafe on Town Street. Check out Jill Stocks’ report for all the details.
A new modular building will help support education, training, gym, coaching and community use at Yarnbury rugby club in Horsforth, after planning permission was granted. In other planning news, a Horsforth church is hoping to install solar panels on its roof.
It’s always good to shout about the successes of local businesses: A Horsforth law firm is up for top national award.
And in football, Horsforth St Margaret’s progressed in the next round of the cup, after edging out Leeds Modernians. Sam Gillinder reports.
Pudsey
It’s the end of an era. The sale of Pudsey Town Hall was officially concluded this week – with a Manchester-based developer taking ownership of the historic building. Be interesting to see what happened next there.
In planning, Pudsey’s Masonic Hall received the green light to install air conditioning following another hot summer.
Wortley
A ‘degraded’ Wortley industrial site is set for improvements, and people living near a dilapidated warehouse will see an improvement to their street – as Don Mort reports.
And congratulations to West Leeds RUFC, who are celebrating their centenary this year with a series of events at Blue Hill Lane.
