FC Farsley eased themselves into the next round of the Leeds & District FA Saturday Senior Challenge Cup with a comprehensive 7-2 win against a battling Stanningley Old Boys side in a rare ‘LS28 derby’.
A hat-trick from Lewis Hanse, a brace for Tom Greaves and strikes by Josh Milner and Joe Storer saw Farsley win a game which – for the first hour at least – saw Stanningley compete for every ball until they tired in the dying stages.
The game was played at the impressive new £9.6 million Woodhall Sports Hub, which only opened last week and is set to be a major asset for grass roots sport in West Leeds.
It was Stanningley who almost took the lead early on, with their forward racing clear of the Farsley defence only to fire narrowly over.
Farsley took control of the game thanks to two finishes from Lewis Hanse, the second a coolly dispatched penalty. The Stanningley keeper did well to save a couple of efforts with his legs and the visitors also had a goal disallowed for an alleged push from a corner.
Stanningley still looked a threat and pulled themselves back into the game at 2-1 early in the second half thanks to a cool finish from their forward when he was played through on goal. Shortly afterwards Stanningley’s shouts for a penalty were waved away by the referee.
Soon after, Farsley’s Storer and Greaves hit the target to give Farsley a 4-1 lead, with the home side pulling a goal back thanks to an own goal following a mix up at the back.
Stanningley were running out of steam and Greaves, Milner and Hanse completed the scoring, to make it 7-2.
Stanningley’s keeper also pulled off some decent stops, a defender’s heroic goal-line clearance prevented Hanse adding to his tally and the woodwork was rattled a couple of times as Farsley progressed to the next round.
Next Saturday, FC Farsley return to league action when PE Bradford United visit Throstle Nest in the Yorkshire Amateur League Supreme Division, kick off 2pm.
