Bramley Baths is inviting deaf and hard-of-hearing families to a special British Sign Language Splash session on Sunday, 27 September, as part of International Week of Deaf People.
The family swim, taking place from 11.30am to 12.30pm, will include BSL support both poolside and in the water. A BSL-trained swim teacher will be in the pool, supported by a BSL interpreter on dry side, helping families communicate, ask questions and enjoy the session together.
The event has been created as part of Bramley Baths’ commitment to making swimming more accessible and ensuring Deaf and hard-of-hearing people feel welcome and included.
It will also provide an opportunity to listen to families and learn more about what could make future visits and swimming sessions work better for them.
Bramley Baths has a long history of welcoming Deaf swimmers, with records showing Deaf people among some of its early swimmers. BSL Splash recognises that history while helping shape a more accessible future for the Baths.
A spokesperson said: “The session is part of Bramley Baths’ MoreThanAPool programme, which celebrates the history of the Grade II listed Edwardian bath house while exploring how it can continue to serve the community today.”
#Morethanapool is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, Morethanapool will restore and protect the Baths and pilot new activities around heritage, health and wellbeing, arts and culture.
BSL Splash is open to families with deaf or hard-of-hearing children. Parents, carers and siblings are welcome to swim too.
