Town councillors have spoken of their concerns over the impact parking charges are having on trade and footfall in Horsforth.

WLD reported last week that town councillors had formally urged Leeds City Council to ditch controversial parking charges at Horsforth’s Fink Hill car park, which they say is displacing parking into surrounding streets and affecting trade.

They submitted their response to a public consultation and review of the charges, which closed last Friday (18 September).

In it, they raised concerns over the impact on trade and footfall, cars being displaced onto surrounding streets and not everyone having immediate access to digital payment methods or bank accounts.

The charges were introduced to raise funds for cash-strapped Leeds City Council.

Watch below as two Horsforth town councillors share their views with the Local Democracy Reporting Service, which WLD has access to and is funded by the BBC:

A Leeds City Council spokesperson said: “Our public consultation has now closed, and we will consider all responses received as part of the review.

“The findings and recommendations will be presented to the council’s executive board in due course.”

Leeds City Council agreed in July to a review of the parking charges introduced in Wetherby, Horsforth, Rothwell, Garforth and Guiseley. People and businesses were asked for their views on the fees of up to £3.65 a day.

The review, which is also looking at financial performance and usage of the car parks, will report its findings in the autumn.

    • Most pensioners are pretty savvy these days, they get their pension paid into bank account so they should be capable of using a bank card.
If a pensioner cannot use a contactless bank card or an app then they probably should not be driving.
