West Leeds weekly roundup: 9 August 2026

By John Baron, WLD editor

Welcome to our latest handy five-minute Sunday roundup capturing what’s been happening in West Leeds during the past week.

With many people on holiday, it’s been a slower news week than usual – but there’s still been lots going on in West Leeds.

Most read and commented story was the latest step towards a £2.9 million scheme to improve roads and footpaths in the Armley Town Street area. Here’s how you can comment on the measures as the council advertising traffic regulation orders, which are the legal backing for in producing road signs and lines, making rules like parking limits or speed restrictions enforceable by law.

Last week I asked the question: Will the mass transit line through West Leeds ever happen? This week we featured the launch of a consultation where views on early plans which outline how the proposed system will contribute to economic growth across the region.

Catch up with the latest planning applications from you community here.

Armley

My favourite story of the week? West Leeds man Chris Sylvester will sit in a bathtub for 60 hours in Leeds City Square to raise money to help people. Regular readers will know Chris founded addiction recovery social enterprise Getting Clean in Armley. It employs people in recovery to make and sell its soap and pledges 50 per cent of its profits to supporting addiction recovery.

Community reporter Rebecca Hunter says New Wortley Community Centre had a blast at their first-ever Kids Fest. Here’s her report and photos from the community event.

And empty shops in nearby Hall Lane could be turned into flats, if plans are approved.

Bramley

Were you at the return of Bramley Carnival last weekend? Here’s our report and lots of photos from what looked like a cracking community event.

Lots to celebrate this week! Congratulations to Bramley Junior parkrun, which has celebrated its tenth birthday with a special event. A small group of volunteers from Bramley Wombles and Bramley St Peter’s answered the call to spruce up the churchyard on Hough Lane – and they did a fantastic job!

Bramley’s Jack Richards stepped into the boxing ring for the fourth time and came out ten minutes later with his first win. Here’s his story, as told by James Bovington.

Calverley

Calls have been made for Leeds City Council to buy the freehold of the Woodhall Lake beauty spot. Full story can be read here.

Farnley

A redundant block of buildings at the Butterbowl Works, off the Ring Road at Farnley, will be demolished after Leeds City Council planners gave the go ahead. And there’s been yet more league and cup success at New Farnley Cricket Club, as Noel Bullock writes.

Leeds South West and Morley MP Mark Sewards – whose patch includes Farnley and Wortley – has welcomed the Government’s decision to develop the formal regulation of the funeral sector following a harrowing case in Hull.

Farsley

It was the culmination of a long-running planning saga this week when councillors gave the green light to proposals for 120 ‘affordable’ homes at Cote Lane in Farsley, despite concerns. A day later, developers gave more details about the scheme – and revealed when work will start on site.

Two historic sites in West Leeds have been shortlisted in the ‘Everyday History Heroes’ competition to uncover places that celebrate the everyday people who shaped the nation. The sites included the Farsley Rehoboth Burial ground and Hollybush.

Horsforth

Jill Stocks reports on how Horsforth St Margaret’s Women’s FC have made history by entering a team in the FA Cup.

And Beatles tribute act, Beatles Revolution, became the latest act to play at Town Street venue Beyond The Red Door, adding their name to an increasing list of entertainers who have brought great entertainment to Horsforth.

Kirkstall

This story gave me a warm glow – a Kirkstall care service which supports adults with learning disabilities recently stepped up for a day of fitness and fun. Check out the lovely photos here.

    • Hi Gary
Thanks for your interest. We expanded into the Horsforth Town Council patch at the start of last year following requests from local residents. I’m afraid we don’t stretch as far as Rawdon as we already cover a substantial patch, mainly through volunteers. Must admit I’d never considered Rawdon as West Leeds, more Aireborough (some in Horsforth have told us they are in North Leeds, not West!). We’ll take your point on board though and consider it should we look at further expansion.
