Welcome to our latest handy five-minute Sunday roundup capturing what’s been happening in West Leeds during the past week.
It’s week two of the school summer holidays, many people are away and it’s what journalists call the ‘silly season’ where news becomes a little scarcer. It’s still been a busy week in West though!
We’ve been following the controversial plans to build 120 new homes at the former Lloyds site in Farsley. Decision day is this Thursday – and council planning officers are recommending the plans be approved in principle, subject to conditions. We’ll bring you a report on the decision from the plans west panel.
Will mass transit ever happen? Campaigners in Leeds have called on new Prime Minister Andy Burnham to make a “cast iron pledge” to deliver trams across the region – including a line which would run through West Leeds.
Yesterday was the first Bramley Carnival in 12 years and it seems to have been a cracking event. We’ll run a full report and photos tomorrow, but in the meantime above and below are a couple of Kelvin Wakefield’s images to whet the appetite.

Armley
A couple of community murals have been created to mark the hopes and aspirations of people in Armley and New Wortley as the £20m Pride in Place funding starts.
Staff and volunteers at the Leeds City Mission (LCM) Compassion Centre in Armley have bid farewell to volunteer Reka Hermann, who has returned to Hungary. Reek’s featured in WLD several times over the past months and will be missed.
Bramley
The Friends of Bramley park group are doing some fantastic work in our community, the latest Bramley Forum meeting heard. But they’re always in need of more volunteers and are encouraging more people to get involved.
Bramley Baths dived into Leeds 400 celebrations with a packed programme of activities to showcase its role as more than a pool and an important heritage site in the city.
Farnley
Council chiefs have signed off a crucial legal agreement for Cobden Primary School in Farnley to become part of the Owlcotes Multi-Academy Trust. Read the full story here.
On the cricket field, New Farnley had a couple of cracking results, including a notable one against Pudsey Congs.
Farsley
Phoenix club FC Farsley have continued their preseason buildup with a couple of games, including this one at Bardsey – we have a short report and photos.
Horsforth
Horsforth in Bloom volunteers have been busy again on New Road Side over the past two weeks as the project to improve the area continues. And Jill Stocks shines the spotlight on the owners of a Horsforth cafe who are doing their bit to give back too the community. With both these stories, it’s good to see community spirit alive and well.
Leeds Women’s Aid, which has a charity shop on New Road Side, has set up a fundraiser to help support its online chat service.
Kirkstall
Now this looked a terrific event: we captured the first monthly community market at Kirkstall Valley Farm via this report and photos. Make a note to go along to the next one!
Pudsey
This a multi-million pound scheme we’ve been reporting on for some time, and this week Yorkshire Water started work on two storm overflow schemes in Pudsey and Cockersdale to improve Pudsey Beck.
It was a bit of a mixed Ofsted report for Park Spring Primary School in Swinnow, with inspectors identifying some areas which require improvement.
Wortley
It was heartwarming to see local residents and a roofing company come together to rescue a cat stuck up a tree for two days in Western Flatts Park.
