West Leeds RUFC 66 North Ribblesdale 14

The old faithful gathered for lunch before a game which saw West Leeds RUFC play at their highest level in their 90-year history, writes Glenn Broadbent.

The talk was of strong packs, big tests and a season of challenges.

North Ribblesdale are formidable opponents and have held the upper hand over the years. The late Bill Dean being the last to come to mind who had one up on them at their place.

Despite last season’s amazing treble-winning achievements, the focus was on survival.

At 3pm teams took to the paddock and 25 minutes later Wests had four tries and a bonus point.

The old lads stuck it out on the terrace, despite the downpour savouring the pack performance.

A pack of forwards who dominated and excellent positional kicking controlled the game.

Two hat-tricks of tries and sensational individual tries gave the home team a 66-14 victory. West Leeds know next week’s trip to Old Brod’s will prove a real test but they are ready.

The winning run continues but we all know these scores can’t last forever. Wests are top of Yorkshire Division One and are looking forward to a difficult season.

Away from the Rugby West Leeds are now hosting ladies only rounder’s session on Monday evenings at Blue Hill Lane, Wortley. For more info please contact the club on 0113 2636869.
