Swing, bebop, jazz or maybe something else with the Retrotones in Pudsey

by Gary Lemal

I was invited to hear the Retrotones rehearsing above the Royal pub in Pudsey.

A dozen or so singers were on the stage with Andy Booth, the musical director stood in front. A brief introduction and – bang – straight into the first number. I was blown away. The impact of the first notes perfectly timed together, the quality of the sounds were in perfect harmony.

Joy and energy flowed from them. No it didn’t! It exploded from the singers. I had only intended to stay for a short time, however an hour and a half later I was still enjoying their music.

About half the singers are relatively local and the others travel from further afield – Sheffield, Chesterfield and Barnsley were mentioned.

The Retrotones describe themselves as “an audacious, bold and rip roaring romp through a carefully hand picked selection of retro-styled classics and modern chart toppers”.

The choice of songs is wide and varied from so many different musical genres, brought together with an energy, feel and musicality that draws the audience in. None of this is by by chance, though it is all carefully rehearsed and practiced ensuring the whole ensemble deliver a highly entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable experience.

I highly recommend that you go along and hear their next performance on 30 May in the Function Room at the Royal on Station Street. Pudsey tickets are available at through TicketSource. I’ve already bought mine!
