Mark’s History: The mystery of the owl above Kirkstall Road’s newest church

Words & Photos: Mark Stevenson

Have you ever noticed this owl above the Chinese Christian Church on Kirkstall Road? The building the owl stands on was once part of the Corporation Work (Highways Department).

The watchful owl will have seen some changes along Kirkstall Road over the years. Photo: Mark Stevenson

The building has been there since at least 1908 I’m assuming with the owl on top.

Since around 2010 the Leeds Chinese Christian Church has occupied the building and there are plans to build a new extension behind the present building.

Would this make it the newest place of worship in West Leeds?
