Swinnow Community Centre nets £117k lottery award

Volunteers at Swinnow Community Centre are thrilled to secure £117,500 funding from the National Lottery Community Fund.

The grant will help grow and sustain vital services for the Swinnow community over the next two years.

It will also allow the centre to bring in a staff team focused on supporting young people, community cohesion and the facility, strengthening its role as a hub for connection, development, and wellbeing.

Will Munton, Co-Founder of Swinnow Community Centre CIC, said: “We’re over the moon with this funding.

“It marks a major milestone in our journey to create a thriving, inclusive space for everyone in Swinnow.

“This gives us the foundation to build a future that’s driven by the community, for the community. We are grateful to The National Lottery Community Fund for their fantastic support and belief in our vision.”

The funding will support four key staff positions: a Centre Manager and three Project Coordinators focused on youth and families, buildings and facilities, and community cohesion.

Craig Newnes, Director of Swinnow Community Centre, added: “This is a real turning point for us.

“With dedicated staff in place, we can deliver more, reach further, and meet needs more effectively. We’ve already seen so much potential in this community, and this funding helps us turn that potential into lasting change.”

Swinnow Community Centre already runs regular activities like stay-and-play, youth clubs, SEN parent support, and community events. With this new investment, it aims to enhance delivery, deepen community relationships, and plan long-term for future sustainability.

Lianne Glastonbury, director of Swinnow Community Centre, added: “As a local parent and staff member at the local school, I’ve seen first-hand how much this centre means to families. It’s a lifeline for many.

“This funding ensures we can run for the long term, with the right people in place to keep growing and supporting everyone who walks through the doors.”

The community centre, which re-launched in May 2024, has welcomed over 9,000 visitors to a range of activities including youth work, parent and toddler sessions, bingo, and a community cafe. Hundreds have enjoyed seasonal events over the holidays too.

The vision for the centre is to be run by the community, by the community, and the team welcome volunteers to join the exciting journey to provide hope and serve the Swinnow area.
