Rodley: Café opens doors to lonely and homeless for a Christmas meal

On Christmas Eve, GRUB café on Rodley Town Street opened its doors to people who were facing Christmas alone or who were without a home.

The café was transformed into a warm cosy space with everyone receiving a great welcome.

In a heart-lifting display of compassion and community spirit, the café team, led by owners Alicia and Adam Hollis prepared a full festive meal complete with all the traditional trimmings.

Guests were greeted with hot drinks, a friendly smile and a seat at a table where everyone was treated like family. For some who attended, it wasn’t just the food that mattered, but it was the feeling of being seen, valued and included.

Alicia Hollis said: “We wanted to host this free event for people who may be lonely or have nowhere to go this Christmas.

“Having had personal experience in the past of issues surrounding the holidays, now that we can help, we wanted nothing more than to do this. Christmas is about giving, and we really wanted to do that.”

Throughout the afternoon, the café buzzed with conversation as strangers became companions, sharing stories, memories, and hopes for the year ahead. Father Christmas made an appearance giving each person a present.

For those who attended, the impact was profound. One guest shared that they did not like Christmas because they are on their own but coming out had cheered her up. Another said simply: “Today, I didn’t feel alone.”

As the plates were cleared and the lights dimmed, the café’s team reflected on the day with gratitude. What they created was more than a meal, it was a reminder that kindness, when shared, can transform a single afternoon into something deeply meaningful.

The café hopes to make the Christmas meal an annual tradition, and plans are already forming for next year.

But for now, the memory of a room filled with warmth, generosity, and community spirit lingers, as a testament to what can happen when people open their doors, and their hearts, to one another.
