Pudsey: Food kiosk refused next to former HSBC bank

A small hot food takeaway kiosk has been refused planning permission next to the former HSBC bank building in Pudsey.

The former HSBC Bank, at the corner of Church Lane and Robin Lane, has been empty since it closed its doors in October 2020.

Plans by owner Mohammed Abbas would have seen the takeaway based on a corner plot of the site, which is currently vacant and was formerly used as an ATM point.

There had been 10 letters of objection, including from Councillor Simon Seary (Cans, Pudsey) and from Leeds Civic Trust.

Concerns included concerns over design, that the appearance is out of keeping with the area, and over the safety of queuing pedestrians at a busy town centre junction.

In refusing the application, council planners highlighted highways and pedestrian safety concerns.

The report added: “It is considered that the addition of a modern low profile kiosk to the side of the [former HSBC] building would be out of keeping with its traditional form.”

A planning statement submitted by the applicants argued the proposal would ‘enhance the site’s usability while respecting the existing building’s heritage and the surrounding Conservation Area’ and would ‘contribute to the vibrancy of the town centre and supporting local businesses’.

Previous plans by Mr Abbas to turn the former HSBC building into a retail unit and flats were approved by council last August.

  1. I’m not surprised this has been refused, its a tiny little corner where it would be situated, and any queueing customers would completely block the pavement at a busy crossing.

  2. Why doesn’t the owner re purpose the premises as a banking hub? It’s what it was built for! .soon there will only be virgin money bank to service the whole of pudsey.A
