Armley’s swimming vicar splashes past half-way mark in ‘Channel’ fundraiser

By Lou Cunningham

By the end of today (Wednesday, 28 May) the Reverend Phil Arnold, of Christ Church Upper Armley, is aiming to be the equivalent of halfway to France – without even leaving Armley.

In a fundraising bid for Armley Good Neighbours project, which includes repair costs for the church roof, Rev Arnold is swimming 1,352 lengths in the pool at Armley Leisure Centre to replicate the entire English channel distance.

WLD first reported on his efforts earlier this month.

Rev Arnold is aiming to add 280 lengths today to his completed 480, channelling community spirit and positivity with his different strokes approach to fundraising in Armley.

He added: “I would like to thank everyone who has donated already and appreciate all the messages of support.”

One of the volunteers keeping a tally of the number of lengths, Alan Miller, said: “I’m not just here at the poolside counting the number of lengths, I’m also here to encourage him to keep going.”
