New Wortley Community Centre’s annual Summer Festival was s a magnet for merry crowds and community spirit.
It featured bustling stalls, thrilling tombolas, lip-smacking food, a Sensory Play Zone, and the stars of the show—Donkeys Teddy and Tommy.
The Roadblock crew was in full swing, letting kids pedal their way to a delicious smoothie on the juice bike while teaming up with volunteer superstar Ana to host a Talent Show. The stage was alive with singing, dancing, and even one girl who could touch her nose with her tongue!
The festival was the last in a series of community events in New Wortley engaging with local residents about the Pride in Place funding coming into the area.
Pride in Place will provide £20 million of funding over the next 10 years and the community will decide what the funding should be spent on.
Development & Engagement Manager Becky Foster discussed Pride In Place and that feedback has highlighted the need for activities for children and young people in the area that focus on raising aspirations from a young age.
She highlighted the importance of the community centre, which already hosts a varied youth programme but noted space limitations for youth groups and families at the centre.
The new “Planting The Seed” project launching in September at the centre aims to introduce young people to various career options and create pathways for young people to become equipped for meaningful employment, training or apprenticeship in the long term.
Becky added: “We want young people to feel heard and supported our project will focus is on developing tailored programs to better serve these our young people.”
