Work on the new roof at Christ Church, Upper Armley was finally completed this week – after a five-year fundraising effort.
The North and South Aisle and vestry roof have all been replaced, along with insulation added at the Grade II Listed building.
The Reverend Phil Arnold said: “The work has cost a little over £200,000 and it’s taken five years to raise the funds.
“We’ve used a combination of fund raising through sponsored walks, swims and rides, along with lots of grant funding applications with the support of Julia Fletcher along with a team including treasurer John Dunn, Isabel Imnan, Steve Appleton and current church wardens Bukky Campbell and Rob Spence.”
Church warden Bukky Campbell added: “It’s definitely been a marathon rather than a sprint. The focus has always been on safeguarding the church as a community hub, rather than simply on the roof.”
Currently over 600 people come through the church each week during term-time. This includes work with refugees and asylum seekers, food bank beneficiaries, uniformed organisations, a GSCE revision group, and mother and toddler groups.
Rev Arnold added: “We’d like to thank all those have supported this work financially. This includes FCC Waste Management, National Churches Trust, Congregational and General, Give to Go Green, Benefact Trust and the Yorkshire Historic Churches Trust.”
