Lest we forget: Sea of poppies makes a splash at Bramley Baths

By Daniel Brabban

Historic Bramley Baths is marking Remembrance Sunday with the installation of a spectacular handmade poppy display.

Community group Hookers and Clickers have created a sea of poppies for the Grade II Listed Baths’ ticket office. The display is in memory of Britain’s war dead.

Volunteer Joanne Brophy, of Hookers and Clickers, said: “We’ve been making poppies since January, there’s 20 of us in Leeds but we’ve had 184 people making poppies for us across the country.

“I’ve always loved Bramley Baths, the building and in particular how community minded it is.”

Along with the display, the group’s signature ‘worry worms’ will be available to purchase at the Baths for £1. Funds from these will go towards the upkeep of the Bramley Baths.

Bramley Baths said via Facebook: “A huge thank you to Hookers and clickers do it for charity for creating this spectacular custom-made poppy display. Every single poppy is hand-crafted and we are sure you will agree it looks fantastic.”

The group has also created poppy displays for the memorials in Kirkstall and Bramley, with 4,504 poppies made for all installations. A further Remembrance installation is to be unveiled later this week in Armley Park.

Hookers and Clickers are a Kirkstall-based community group who craft in support of charities, hospitals and hospices.

Their work has received praise on social media.

“It looks amazing. I wish I had their talent,” said one commenter. “The entrance and memorial at the park are stunning. I smile every time I go to the centre, the work displayed lifts my spirits. I come from a forces family and am in awe of their bravery.”

Another added: “Looks amazing, I saw it for the first time at Friday’s ladies’ swim. The girls who work there were brilliant and very friendly, music playing, a lovely atmosphere too. I’ll be going back most definitely, thank you Bramley Baths for making me feel welcome.”

The Hookers and Clickers group has previously worked with charities such as ‘Armley Helping Hands’ and the Ukraine appeal.

The group meets every Wednesday at St Stephen’s Hall in Kirkstall at 10.30am and would welcome anybody who wishes to join. Contact hookersandclickers@gmail.com.
