Katie White MP backs climate awards

By Jill Stocks

Katie White, MP Leeds North West and UK Climate Minister, is to chair the judging panel at the inaugural Pride in Our Planet Awards taking place next month.

The awards, which will be supported by Sky and held at the Conduit Club ahead of London Climate Action Week, will celebrate people and organisations making a difference with awards across a number of categories.

Nominations are invited for the following categories:

  • Community Climate Hero
  • Business of the Year
  • Innovator of the Year
  • Climate Communicator of the Year
  • Restoring Britain Award

Horsforth’s MP is keen for the unsung heroes to get some recognition. She told us: “I’m really excited to be chairing the judging panel for the inaugural Pride in Our Planet Awards this June in London.

“One of the things I love most about this job is getting to meet people across the country who are just quietly getting on with making things better.

“People restoring nature, starting new businesses, bringing communities together, inventing new ideas, or finding practical ways to tackle climate challenges without making a huge fuss about it.

“A lot of that work never gets the attention it deserves. These awards are about changing that.”

Most recently Ms White has been campaigning to ban destructive bottom trawling in the world’s oceans, and introduced a special showing of the Sir David Attenborough film “Ocean” earlier in the month at Horsforth’s Grove Cinema, organised by Leeds Greenpeace and Horsforth Climate Action.

The Pride In Our Planet Awards will take place on June 18 and bring together people from across the media, politics, business and community organisations, highlighting stories from these groups and individuals who are tackling climate challenges through new business ventures, new ideas and bringing the community together.

Nominations for the awards close next week and you can vote using this link.
