Friends of Pudsey Cemetery are inviting volunteers to join their latest Action Day at Pudsey Cemetery this Saturday, 29 August, from 10.30am – meet inside the main gates.
Volunteers should wear suitable clothing and sturdy footwear, all tools and gloves are provided. Tasks can be matched to different levels of experience and physical ability, and nobody is expected to tackle anything beyond their capabilities. Tea and biscuits provided.
Ahead of the session, Friends chairman Damon Sugden spent just one hour tackling a badly overgrown area of Section A to demonstrate what can be achieved with even a small amount of volunteer time.
The before-and-after photographs show the result: an hour of cutting back unwanted growth and self-seeded saplings produced a substantial pile of cuttings and, more importantly, opened up the area around the graves again.
Damon said: “Sometimes the scale of a cemetery like Pudsey can make you wonder where to start. The answer is simply to pick a manageable area, give it an hour and see what happens. You don’t have to give up an entire day to make a difference.”
The Friends group has been helping care for and promote the heritage of Pudsey Cemetery for nine years. Action Days are also a chance to meet people, get outdoors and learn more about this important local green space.
