The new football season has begun and Horsforth St Margaret’s looked confident before their encounter with Brighouse Town. However they suffered a 0-3 defeat on their home ground of King George’s Field.
The West Yorkshire Association Football League Division One will be hotly contested over the course of the year – last year Horsforth finished sixth.
This year Horsforth will hope to be in contention to win it but will have to play better than this if they are going to be.
Before the match manager Mark Kilbride said they hoped to be challenging for promotion to the Premier Division.
If they achieve this feat it will be decided in May 2027.
Horsforth started the game well, had they been more clinical with their finishing they could have been in the lead. A direct free kick from Jake Kilbride was easily saved. Also twice they couldn’t find the target with close range headers.
17 minutes into the game Brighouse got the ball into the six yard box and the away team were able to knock the ball in from close range.
On 28 minutes Kilbride tried to put the ball into Adam Gregory but the move came to nothing. These two players need to combine well if Horsforth are to succeed.
Minutes before the break Horsforth had the ball in the net only for it to be disallowed due to a foul moments earlier.
1-0 to Brighouse Town was the score at half time.
Three minutes into the second half Brighouse got a second. An initial shot was blocked but the home team couldn’t prevent them from scoring from the rebound.
Kilbride tried a shot from 25 yards out but the effort was slightly ambitious, his frustration showing.
Midway through the second half Brighouse got a third goal through a direct free kick which was quite easily dispatched.
Near the end of the match Eyob Casa passed the ball from the right into Gregory who found the net from inside the penalty area only for him to have been judged offside.
After the match Mark Kilbride said: “Not a good result today, we were second best to the ball in the challenges, we weren’t physical enough. They were clinical with their finishing and we didn’t create anything. We’ll bounce back on Wednesday playing Pool away, hopefully we’ll go into that and pick up some points there”.
It’s early doors but the result leaves Horsforth on four points in their league after three matches having won one drawn one and lost one.
Horsforth will play their first League Cup game away to Harlow Hill which is provisionally scheduled to take place in October. Last season Harlow Hill won Division One and currently sit third in the Premier Division.
