Bench restored on Pudsey’s Greenside Greenway

By Gary Lemal

While clearing overgrown weeds and brambles along the former railway line, members of Greenside Greenway CIO uncovered the rusty stanchions of an old bench.

After securing permission to reinstate it, the group completed the restoration in early August.

Three timber sleepers were purchased for the new seat. Following careful measurements—and a double-check on spelling—the words ‘GREENSIDE GREENWAY‘ were routed into the main timber.

The wood was sanded smooth and treated with preserver and teak oil, while the original metal legs were scrubbed down and repainted. Meanwhile, another volunteer cleared away the surrounding vegetation to prepare the site.

Once the preparations were complete, the three sleepers were set in place and bolted down.

The organisation hopes that many people will enjoy stopping at the restored bench, whether to listen to the local songbirds, take a peaceful break, or — in the case of children walking home from school — sit back and scroll through their phones.
