Former Fulneck School building up for sale

By John Baron

A historic Pudsey school building could be set for a new lease of life after it was placed on the market.

Fulneck School closed last July after 272 years due falling pupil numbers and rising costs. The independent day and boarding school was based at the historic Moravian settlement of Fulneck and dated back to 1753.

This week the grade 1 Listed building and extensive grounds was marketed on the Hilco Global real estate solutions website as a ‘rare opportunity to acquire and reposition a substantial former school estate’.

The property includes part of the Grade I listed eastern and western terraces, alongside a range of ancillary buildings.

Offers are invited for the freehold interest, either as a whole or in separate lots.

The marketing brochure for the site states: “The scale and character of the estate lend themselves to either continued educational or institutional use, or a comprehensive conversion and redevelopment scheme, supported by strong surrounding residential demand and excellent regional connectivity.”

It adds the buildings could be used for residential conversion, later living or care accommodation, educational or specialist provision or community or institutional use, subject to planning.

The Robinson building at the former school will be retained the Moravian Church.

More details on the sale listing can be found here.

Fulneck School was established in 1753 in order to provide an education for the sons and daughters of the church’s ministers and missionaries. Famous former pupils included actress Dame Diana Rigg and HH Asquith, who was Prime Minister between 1908–16.

  1. “excellent regional connectivity”…. usual gibberish but Fulneck must be amongst the most difficult places to get to and from!

    • Really? If you can get to Pudsey centre which is served well by Leeds Ring Road and M62/M1 not far away, then its just 1 mile to Fulneck
