A boxer from Belle Isle hasn’t looked back since joining The Ministry of Boxing in Armley this past New Year.
Kyren Foster has just won his first bout with the west Leeds club by unanimous decision on the home show held at White Rose Banqueting Suite on Tong Road.
“I last had a contest three years ago and although I won by second round stoppage, I had dislocated my shoulder in the first,” Kyren said.
“It had to be sorted to have any hope of making a career in the sport. This wasn’t easy as it involved considerable physio and then surgery in January last year. The journey back to fitness has been lengthy and I’ve had to be diligent and committed in training.”
“I was training at Haynes & Miller’s gym in Beeston. Anthony Miller is my dad. I learnt loads there and it’s a friendly place, but I decided to move to The Ministry as it’s an England Boxing affiliated club which will give me more opportunity for competition hopefully at elite level.
“My aim has always been to box as a professional. My shoulder injury set me back, frankly, so now’s the time to get on with it. I love the discipline and structure the training imposes. I’m thriving at my new gym.
“There’s lots of talent and a strong family atmosphere where all are made welcome irrespective of background. As is typical of many young men, I was lacking genuine purpose and passion in life and getting into trouble. Boxing changed my life for the better. I believe it should be mandatory for all children to learn how to defend themselves.”
Coach Philip Wisher said: “Kyren’s was one of 14 quality bouts on our fourth home show. I’ve known Kyren for years and I’m delighted that we’ve now got him training with us. I’m excited to see him make even more progress as he eventually moves to elite level.”
