Boxer Oscar is ‘loving life’ in both West Leeds and USA

By James Bovington

Oscar Fletcher enjoyed working in the United States as a children’s football coach for much of the spring and summer last year, and is planning to return in April for the 2026 season.

“I work full time as a coach at The Foot Tech Academy in Leeds,” said Oscar, 19. “My manager Luke Towning recommended me for the placement with Challenger Sport in the US.

“I applied and was successful. The best thing about it with Challenger was the option to travel around and see some of the country and getting the chance to do coaching in different places.”

Former Farnley Academy student Oscar lives with his parents and older sister in Lower Wortley.

“In all I got to spend some time in 11 different states and even ventured into Canada around Montreal. My coaching was mainly on the East Coast, but I got as far down as Miami.

“It was interesting to get some experience of how vast the US is and the differences and similarities between people in say Florida and New England. I hope the children felt I’d helped them improve in how they play soccer as they call it. I certainly learnt a lot from them.

“I started off in Massachusetts teaching youngsters aged between eight and 14. Over the summer I worked at several soccer camps and was billeted with host families. Without exception everyone was pleasant and welcoming and the players keen to develop their skills. I’ve benefitted through improving my interpersonal skills, standing on my own two feet and gaining confidence as a young adult. I’d recommend it to everyone who gets the opportunity.”

Oscar was himself a talented young footballer until he contracted Perthes disease which required him to have hip surgery.

He added: “I was never the same player after that. Boxing was my second love and as it happens the Perthes apparently didn’t affect my ability to box. I started attending classes at Bramley Villagers club where I was made welcome and my situation understood.”

“Before long I was having some bouts and winning two title belts. In my debut bout I got a stoppage against an older and more experienced opponent in the first minute.

“I’m hoping to be able to get back into the ring possibly on the Villagers show planned for 21 March and I’m grateful to my sponsors Joe and Dan at Relish Foods for all their help.”
