Tree preservation confirmed at former Kirkstall Brewery site

By John Baron

Council chiefs have made a temporary tree preservation order permanent at the Kirkstall Brewery site in Broad Lane.

A complaint about significant tree felling at the Kirkstall Brewery site was originally received by the council in April 2024 and a council officer visited the site, which houses student halls of residences, the following month.

A council report said: “It was clear that a large area of mature trees had been removed. At Tyler time of site visit, the trees did not have legal protection. It was deemed expedient for the Council to serve a tree preservation order at the sites, which was served 16 July 2024.”

The initial order was made for short-term or emergency protection.

Council officers have this week published a report saying the order should now be made permanent to protect a mixture of mature trees which would otherwise be at risk from felling.

“Having carefully considered the issues raised by the tree owner, on balance it is considered that the Tree Preservation Order is warranted on the grounds of amenity and expediency,” the report concluded.

The full report and background papers can be read here.
