Summer garden event sizzles in sultry Armley

By Andy Dalton

Organisers ran out of ice creams to serve the record numbers of visitors who turned up to support the Leeds City Mission summer garden event in Armley last Saturday afternoon.

Scores of visitors turned up to enjoy a social occasion and refreshments at this seasonal event.

Beefburgers, hot dogs and liquid refreshments were served as people socialised sitting around tables on the lawn adjacent to the City Mission Compassion Centre in Mistress Lane

They were serenaded by a violinist and guitarist as they enjoyed their food. Supply of free ice creams for those attending was outstripped by demand.

As visitors relaxed in the shade of leafy trees from the hot sun, they enjoyed hearing the inspiring story of ex-convict Geoffrey Bryant as he recounted his redemption journey from youthful rebellion, crime and drugs to a honest man running his own business and helping as a volunteer at the church he now attends.

A spokesman for the City Mission said the event also featured a ‘bargain basement’ offering books, card, bric a brac and other items.

Donations received will assist the charity in its sterling work amongst people struggling at the margins of life in West Leeds.

City Mission co-ordinator Andy Dalton thanked those attending for their interest and support on the day.

Leeds City Mission is a multi-church agency organising a number of projects from its Compassion Centre in Mistress Lane, Armley, helping people at the margins of life. More details on 0113 345 3118 or e-mail lcm1837@gmail.com.
