Stanningley Road: Pedestrian dies following collision – UPDATED

A 30-year-old pedestrian died after being knocked over on Stanningley Road last night.

West Yorkshire Police say the man was walking by the junction of Stanningley Road and Armley Grange Drive when he was struck. He died at the scene.

Stanningley Road was closed both ways for several hours last night.

UPDATE SUNDAY 2.25pm:

The Skoda car involved in the crash was being driven away from Leeds towards the Stanningley bypass and police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or saw the Skoda immediately before the collision and the manner in which it was being driven to come forward.

Police would also like to hear from anyone who may have been driving in the area at the time with dashcam footage.

The incident happened at 10.58pm.

Any witnesses are asked to call police on 101 quoting log 2189 of Saturday 13 July.

A 20-year-old male has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

UPDATE SUNDAY 2.30pm:

Shane Grimes has been named locally as the man who was hit by a car. It’s believed Mr Grimes was a dad.

Posting on Facebook, Armley councillor Lou Cunningham said:

“Tragic news. R.I.P and condolences to the family of the young man – I have sent an email to highways, the police and our MP this morning. This is a stretch of road that us as councillors raised concerns about collisions and fatalities at a recent meeting.”
