Plans to demolish an eyesore former Pudsey pub which dates back to the late 19th century have been refused by Leeds City Council.
The Boar’s Head, on Roker Lane, has stood empty since 2003 and plans would have seen the building make way for a small terrace of three two-bedroom homes.
Architect Richard Leach, of Bingley-based Plot 74 Architecture, said the building ‘cannot really lend itself to a conversion’ due to cost and space issues.
But council planning officers said an opposite property would be overlooked by the new properties and raised concerns about reducing the existing width of Troughton Road. In a report, they added:
“The proposed development would appear overly dominant within the street scene and represent a cramped, poor and unsympathetic form of development which is at odds with the general character of the locality.”
The Boar’s Head is one of four pubs on about a mile stretch of road that has closed in the past 20 years. The White Cross, the Regent and the Weasel also shut their doors; only the Fleece on Fartown is still in business.
The name of the applicant is simply given as Butterfield on the application form, and the company name ‘Purfleet’.

For real! It’s a busy residential street, not a single dwelling can be described as not overlooked. The former pub is in disrepair with smashed windows but according to Leeds city council 3 terraced homes would be worse?
