This week marks Volunteer Week, and volunteers from New Wortley Community Centre were invited to a delightful event organised by Voluntary Action Leeds (VAL).
At the event, they had the chance to meet Ronnie the Rhino and the new Lord Mayor. Just a few days later, they enjoyed a BBQ award ceremony to honour their contributions.
Rachel Arnold, New Wortley’s volunteer co-ordinator, said: “Volunteers’ week is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our volunteers and all they give.
“Not only do they give to the local community here in New Wortley, but it’s also so encouraging to hear how they learn and develop new skills and confidence through volunteering and connecting with our local community.”
Certificates were handed out, with Daniel snagging the title of “Longest Serving Volunteer” with a whopping 18 years under his belt! Lesley scooped up the “Above and Beyond” award, Abigail was crowned “Rising Star” – and the list goes on!
The crown jewel, “Volunteer of the Year,” went to the fabulous Indu. She said: “Volunteering here has been a deeply rewarding experience for me.
“The people are amazing, and I’ve enjoyed applying my skills while learning new ones. I’ve found it has become a space for me to grow & express myself. I feel more grounded and more like myself.”
