Kirkstall Road closed both ways following accident – UPDATED

UPDATE 5.30pm: Two men who were arrested in connection with a fatal road traffic collision on Kirkstall Road have been released on police bail. 

The men, aged 23 and 36, were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving following the collision in Kirkstall Road last night that caused the death of a 33-year-old male cyclist. 

The 22-year-old driver of the Volkswagen Golf involved in the incident remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital. Enquiries are ongoing.

UPDATE 9.30am: Police are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision in Kirkstall Road. 

At 11:26pm last night (14/11) police received reports of a road traffic collision in Kirkstall Road near to the Cardigan Fields retail park. 

A silver Volkswagen Golf, which was travelling towards the city centre, had been involved in a collision with a 33-year-old male cyclist who was pronounced dead at the scene. 

The Golf overturned and came to rest in a parade of shops causing significant damage to two premises on Kirkstall Road. 

The driver of the Golf, a 22-year-old man, was seriously injured and was taken to Leeds General Infirmary where he is currently in a stable condition in intensive care. 

A Volkswagen Passat is also believed to have been involved in the incident and the occupants of that vehicle, two men aged 23 and 36, from Leeds, have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and are currently in custody. 

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Spencer said: “This is clearly a very serious incident that has resulted in a man’s death and we are carrying out extensive enquiries to establish the full circumstances. 

“A scene is currently in place in Kirkstall Road and will be undergoing detailed forensic examination throughout the day. Work is also ongoing to make safe the shop premises that were damaged. We expect the scene to remain in place for some considerable time. 

“There will be significant disruption to traffic in the area. Diversions are in place and we would advise people to seek alternative routes and avoid the area as much as possible. 

“We have already spoken to some witnesses but we are still keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or who saw the movements of either the two cars or the cyclist in the time leading up to the collision.”

ORIGiNAL POST 7.30am: Police are currently dealing with a serious road traffic collision near the Cardigan Fields complex involving two vehicles and a building.

Two people are believed to be seriously injured.

Kirkstall Road is closed in both directions at the junction with Willow Road.

Roads in the area are expected to be closed in the area for some time this morning including into the rush hour.

UPDATE: Police say road will be closed until around 10am this morning.
