Historic Burley Library added to national ‘buildings at risk’ register

By John Baron

The former Burley Library building has been added to a national list of historic buildings at risk.

The library was open on Cardigan Road between 1926 and 2016 but closed due to council budget cuts and the need for repairs.

The building was listed grade ll in 2017 by Historic England and remains awaiting redevelopment. In February 2024 proposals for a 78-home co-living scheme at the library were approved at appeal.

Posting on Facebook, Leeds Civic Trust said: “We are delighted that all six entries nominated by our Heritage Watch Group have been included on SAVE Britain’s Heritage Buildings at Risk List for 2026.

“Inclusion on this list is an important step in raising wider awareness of these buildings and the urgent need to secure their future.”

The buildings Leeds Civic Trust nominated also included:

  •  Micklefield House
  •  Fearnville House
  •  Moorfield House
  •  Halton Dial Substation
  •  83-89 and 90 Kirkgate.

SAVE is a national organisation which fights against what it says is the ‘needless and wasteful’ demolition of historic buildings of all types and ages across the UK

SAVE’s director, Henrietta Billings, said about the list: “At a time when local authority budgets are increasingly under pressure, and construction costs are going up, there has never been a more important time to publish this snapshot of threatened buildings across the UK.

“These places are central to the identity and character of places we love. Instead of lying empty and neglected, they should be repurposed and contributing to good growth now and for future generations.”

Other West Leeds buildings also on the list includes Cliff House School in Wortley, The Rising Sun Pub off Kirkstall Road, Farnley Hill Methodist Church and Sunday School and Ling Bob Farmhouse and Stables in Horsforth
