Specsavers Kirkstall and PureGym in Kirkstall have raised £1,800 to fund 60 prostate screening tests.
On 1 July, between 10am and 2pm, a nurse from the charity will be on-site at the Specsavers store at Kirkstall Bridge Shopping Park to provide PSA testing, which measures a protein in the blood produced by the prostate that can be indicative of prostate cancer.
The teams at Specsavers, which is locally owned and run, and PureGym took part in a week of fundraisers at the end of last month – including sponspored spin bike sessions, a cake sale, tombola and raffle – to raise funds for the tests.
The tests come via the Graham Fulford Charitable Trust (GFCT), a charity providing prostate cancer screening tests since 2004.
Jennie Long, ophthalmic director at Specsavers Kirkstall, said: “To everyone who donated to our week-long fundraiser, we want to say a huge thank you – without your support we wouldn’t be able to be offering these potentially life-saving tests to members of the community.
“It’s amazing to be able to see where all the hardwork and genoristy is going and we hope this fundraiser not only encourages people to get tested but also raises awareness of prostate cancer and PSA testing too.’”
Graham Fulford, founder of GFCT, added: “The PSA test is quick and straightforward. It’s a simple blood test with a professional phlebotomist, with no physical examination required, and most men are in and out within minutes. For many, the result provides reassurance, while for others it can be the first step towards further investigation and earlier diagnosis, when treatment outcomes are often much better.”
