Friends of Burley Park celebrate successful year

A group of West Leeds volunteers are set to report on a ‘phenomenally successful’ year of improving their local park.

The Friends of Burley Park group will hold its AGM tomorrow (Wednesday, 1 July) – and is appealing for more people to join its ranks.

Chair Mike Winter said: “Anyone who attends our meetings or the various events across the year are considered members and the Friends group only functions if there are sufficient volunteers involved to keep things running smoothly.

“You are warmly invited to the AGM and anyone is welcome to nominate themselves forĀ one of the officer roles, or to be part of the wider steering group who help with ideas etc for the activities we run.Ā If you’ve ever thought about getting more involved, now is a great time—whether it’s helping with planning, sharing skills, or simply offering occasional support, your input could make a real difference, and we’d love to have you on board.”

The Friends’ annual activity report says the group has carried out a raft of activities, with more than 40 individuals giving over 300 hours of time. Achievements includes installing new signboards, cutting back vegetation, weeding, planting and litter picking, as well as running events and replacing the surface of the park’s artificial cricket wicket.Ā

“This was a phenomenally successful year for the group, during which we marked 125 years since Burley Park was formally opened in September 1900,” the report concludes.

The AGM will be held on Wednesday, 1 July from 6.30pm to 8pm at the Cardigan Centre on Cardigan Road.
