Community spirit helps rescue stranded Wortley cat

Wortley residents and a local roofing company worked together to help save a cat which had been stranded up a tree for two days.

The young cat had been stuck up a tree in Western Flatts Park, by the old playground, with a post on Facebook sparking almost 50 comments from concerned residents.

The cat was rescued thanks to the efforts of concerned residents and the efforts of Wortley-based Trusst Roofing.

Wortley resident Katherine Turner said: “I had seen on social media that a cat had been stuck up a tree for a while and my husband saw it still stuck the next morning. I had to go to work but couldn’t get the poor thing out of my mind. I posted asking for help on local Facebook groups. I also tried the fire brigade and RSPCA who couldn’t help. 

“I remembered what a great bunch Trusst Roofing are and dropped them a message. I got an immediate response, they were happy to help and would be there within 10 minutes. 

“When I arrived they were there along with some other amazing local residents who had brought ladders and a cat basket. 

“The man from Trusst roofing went up the ladders, which was precarious due to the terrain. The rest of us stood with blankets ready to catch the cat in case it jumped. It took him a while but he managed to grab the cat and brought it down from the huge height. The cat unfortunately ran off but looked well enough. 

“I can’t thank Trusst Roofing enough for going out of their way to help when nobody else could, what a hero.”

After being rescued, the cat was healthy enough to run off and had a snack.

A spokesperson for Trusst Roofing said he was happy to help out and did it because of his love of animals: “I do it all the time. Last year I rescued birds from a new roof we were doing opposite Asda. We also managed to keep a load of bees all safe. I help bees all the time, I must have done it about 10 to 15 times during my career.

“I do it just to help animals and people out. I’m a sucker for a damsel in distress and I’ll do whatever is needed!

“It has reinforced my appreciation for working within my local community of Wortley and for the exceptional individuals we have in our area.”
