A carnival which dates back to the 19th century is being revived in West Leeds this summer.
Bramley Carnival returns to Bramley Park on Saturday, 1 August 2026, from 11am to 5pm. This free community celebration returns after a 12-year absence, featuring a large funfair, live music, a dog show and family activities.
Attractions include a 50ft fun house, bumper cars, tea cups, a big inflatable slide, side stalls, five-a-side football and an interactive animal tent.
The celebration allows charities, institutions and local businesses to promote their causes and offers, and allows local residents to access information and advice.
The event is being led by Helen Garrand, who organised the carnival alongside Terry Knapton for many years until his passing in 2014.
Saturday morning’s Bramley parkrun has been cancelled to accommodate the carnival. Armley parkrun is the nearest alternative.
History of Bramley Carnival
Bramley Carnival is believed to be one of the oldest carnivals in Leeds, with origins dating back to the mid-19th century.
Key milestones include:
- Friendly Society Walks (c.1865):Â Annual parades organised by local Friendly Societies.
- The “Bramley Clash”:Â A well-known incident in which rival society bands met on Town Street and attempted to outplay each other.
- First Official Event (1891/1892):Â A formal procession held to raise money for Leeds General Infirmary and the Workpeople’s Hospital Fund.
- Golden Era:Â The carnival became a prominent annual event featuring decorated horse-drawn floats, Maypole dancing, and widespread community participation.
Organisers are currently exploring the possibility of moving the carnival back to its traditional May timeslot from next year onwards.
