Bestselling children’s author and illustrator Kate Pankhurst is to design a mural for the new village library – and has asked local children to help with ideas.

Kate, who has a studio in Sunny Bank Mills and lives in West Leeds, used her latest book We Are All Inventors in a workshop to inspire the mural she is producing for the walls of the children’s library in its new home in the Mechanics Institute.

More than 20 children and parents were at the workshop where Kate talked about the book and her mural. She had the children draw their own Inventor and said she hoped the ideas would help inspire her when making the mural.

The library re-located to the Mechanics Institute at the end of January after the previous building was sold by Leeds City Council. It raised £207,000. The new library now has separate space for the adult and children’s libraries.

Kate, who is originally from Liverpool, was inspired by libraries from a young age, loving books and the adventures they described. She went on to and produce her own comic inspired by the Beano and then knew she wanted to be an illustrator.

Her books include the Fantastically Great Women series, Hello We are All Astronauts and the Mariella Mystery series. They are all available from Calverley and other Leeds libraries.
