Bramley Crown Green Bowling Club hosted their first taster session on Saturday morning.
The weather was perfect for people interested and wanting to try this leisurely sport.
Crown Green Bowling is commonly thought as a ‘retirement activity’ and in recent years has seen a decline in membership. But it attracts people from all ages and backgrounds.
The ‘bowling green’ in Bramley Park is situated to the left as you enter the park from Moorfields just off Bramley Town Street.
Members were happily demonstrating their skills and knowledge to families and friends who had turned up for these taster sessions.

Intrigued to find out more, I went along to Bramley’s taster session. As a total novice I was guided on how to hold the weighted ball with its bias, to keeping one foot on the mat and how to roll it towards the target bowl known as a jack over the intentional raised centre (crown).
The aim is that the person with their bowl nearest the jack wins a point. The first to 21 points is the overall winner.
Membership and green fees:
- Leeds City Council have recently increased green fees to £90; club membership is £15 making a total of £105. This year, the club isn’t charging membership to any new members who pay their green fees at Bramley.
- Children from the age of 12 years old can join a club and take part in club, city, regional and National competitions.
- Social memberships are also available.
The taster session attracted many people who had never played the sport previously. The Robinson family (pictured) enjoyed their first time playing as a family, while friends Catherine, Sharon and Dexter (pictured) enjoyed learning about the sport.
Taster sessions will be every Saturday morning from 9.30am until 11am. Refreshments are available to purchase from the club house.
