It was a big turn-out the for Calverley Horticultural Society’s annual show on Saturday at the village Methodist Hall. For the first time the grade 2 listed chapel was also used to display the record number of art entries.
Despite the hot, dry weather over the late spring and summer, there were still plenty of vegetables, fruit and flowers on show, with trophies awarded in all classes, said Show Secretary Noel Akers, though the heat did affect the number of entries in the baking classes, with bakers reluctant to turn on the oven in the high temperatures!
“We had a very good turn-out from both exhibitors and visitors and are very grateful for the support from sponsors including Calverley Rotary and individuals,” he said.
“We were also impressed by the number of art entries from children thanks to support from Calverley Library, definitely the best we’ve had.”

It’s wonderful to see the quality of the veg.
I still have a drawing that I submitted to the show when I was 7 years old in 1946.
My dad had an allotment and entered the show every year until he died in 1951.
Long may it go on.
