Tree clearance scheduled for this week on railway embankments in Armley has been postponed, following concerns by local residents.

Campaigners noticed that trees and vegetation near the fence that Network Rail had agreed to leave in situ had been felled and removed the previous weekend by contractors.

Network Rail told campaigners on Friday:

“Apologies for any distress caused over the last week, we have considered the view points and acknowledge your request to stop the works this weekend.

“We have cancelled Saturday (20/21 Feb) night and the daytime working next week noting your concerns.

“Next week we will complete the investigation with the contractors to understand last weekend’s activities.”

Campaigners also said that contractors daytime work had not been agreed to with Network rail, and that only a few days’ notice has been given.

An Armley Trees campaign spokesperson said:

“As concerned residents, we need to ensure that the work continues in a way that respects the environment, biodiversity and the community living next to the railway. The Tree Council have agreed to support us in our campaign for better communications and tree management for our local community.

“Having additional ongoing stress added to people’s already difficult lives through the manner in which this programme of work is being approached is not acceptable, particularly during lockdown.”

The Armley Trees campaign is made up of people who live in the Armley Park Road area who are standing up for their local environment and campaigning for meaningful community engagement with Network Rail.

It was set up last year following concerns about tree felling next to Armley Park Road and Armley Park woods, off Canal Road.
