Armley ‘Strimfest’: Call for volunteers to help Moor clearance

A West Leeds charity has put out a call for as many strimmers as Armley can muster to help out this Sunday (14 June).

Hill Top Moor, opposite the Travellers Rest pub on Hill Top Road, is in dire need of grass clearance.

While Armley Common Right Trust’s ride-on mower will manage much of the land, volunteers need help to deal with the grass on slopes, among the woodland and between the trees where the mower can’t reach. 

Hill Top Moor is one of the patches of land that belongs to the people of Armley and is protected by an 18th century Act of Parliament that created the open spaces in Armley. The trust was founded in 1799 and is Armley’s oldest charity, working to protect, preserve and maintain the land on behalf of the residents. 

Last year saw the planting of a community orchard at Hill Top, and the trust has plans for more over the coming years. But in the short term, they need help to manage the growth and make it more accessible. So they’ve announced Strimfest.

Trust chair Philip Cave said: “We’re aiming to gather as many residents with strimmers as possible. Whether they’re battery or petrol, every one will help make a difference.” 

The group will be meeting at Hill Top on Sunday from 11am and Philip is hoping that Armley residents will respond.

“We have every intention of bribing people with biscuits and good company,” he added. 

“I don’t think there’s a Guinness World Record for strimmer gatherings, but it would be fun to have a go at setting a record! And if we don’t set the record we’ll have fun anyway.” 

‘Strimfest’ will be held from 11am to 1pm this Sunday (14 June).
