An empty site which used to house the former Whingate Primary School could be turned into 16 family homes, if plans are given the go ahead.

Developer, Armley-based Leodis Homes, wants to build 16 three-bedroom semi-detached properties on the former school site off Whingate Road.

A planning statement by the developers accompanying the application said:

“There is a shortage of new family homes in the area. The development is designed to provide local housing with minimal impact on the surrounding layout.”

The former school became West Leeds Family Learning Centre before closure. The empty council-run building was demolished in 2015 following problems with vandalism.

The future of the site was discussed at a controversial public consultation held in January 2016. Some campaigners in the area had hoped for a park or play area, while others wanted private housing due to the fear of anti-social behaviour.

The latest proposals for the site can be viewed – and commented upon – here.
