Wortley park group brings community together with Little Free Library and Easter fun

By Katherine Turner

The first Easter egg hunt will be held at Western Flatts Cliff Park, Wortley, on Sunday, 5 April.

Organised by the ‘Friends of’ group, you can hop over to the park for an outdoor trail around the park and gardens.

There is a trail to follow, where you can find the answers and swap your findings for a chocolatey Easter surprise.

Neil Bonnington, Chair of the friends group, encouraged people to come and get involved: “We are hosting the Easter egg hunt from 2pm, as well as the official opening of the Little Free Library, located between the orchard and bowling green, on Green Hill Lane.

“Please come along and follow the clues around the park to claim your prize. The bowling green is hosting an open day between 1pm and 3pm so why not combine both and have a go at bowling too. Refreshments will be available at the bowling green.”

The Little Free Library is one of many free-to-use libraries where residents can donate, take or swap books at no cost. Farnley & Wortley Councillor, Adrian McCluskey (Lab) explained: “I will be opening the new library this Sunday.

“Our community has seen the closure of two libraries on the Butterbowls and the Heights. I am proud to be behind using public money for the opening of two new, albeit little, libraries and this is only possible because of the park Friends groups.”

The Friends group have welcomed the introduction of the new library.

Mr Bonnington added: “We have been working with Adrian for some time to get this facility, a big thanks to him for his support. As it is the National Year of Reading, it is great to encourage all ages to use and share books, instead of using technology.”

The Friends group is holding its AGM on Thursday, 23 April at 7pm at The Hanover Arms. New volunteers are needed to join their committee.

Mr Bonnington said: “It is a great opportunity to contribute ideas and help develop our wonderful park. If you just want to help with tasks in the park or have more involvement, such as organising events, raising funds or socialising with like-minded people.

“It would be great to see more people come along and get involved. We meet monthly at The Hanover Arms.”

For the Easter event you can register here or pop along on the day.
