Sweltering shoppers in Armley Town Street are being offered chilled drinks to quench their thirst.
Many visitors to the Armley shopping area are finding that current heatwaves are making their shopping trips an exhausting ordeal.
Volunteers at Leeds City Mission are responding to the current heat crisis. They are offering chilled drinks of water, juice and pop to anyone needing refreshment. Between 10am to 3pm Monday to Friday anyone can call for a free drink at their Compassion Centre opposite Armley Library.
Development Worker Andy Dalton said that the Mission had received a donation of quantities of pop cans and caprisun drinks.
“They are chilled overnight in their refrigerator and then made available free of charge to anyone passing their premises on their way to or from the local shops.,” Mr Dalton said. “Visitors are also welcome to take shelter from the sun inside from the Compassion Centre. Comfortable chairs are available for respite.”
He said that drinking plenty of liquids was crucial in the current temperatures. He urged anyone feeling the effects of heat to call and collect a can of pop, a caprisun drink or cups of water so that they can maintain safe hydration levels in the sweltering heat.
The offer of free liquid refreshments will continue for the duration of the heatwaves.
Leeds City Mission is one of the oldest charities in the city being in continuous existence since 1837. It works with marginalised people and those struggling with life. It is a multi-church agency.
