Join the pride – West Leeds Lions are recruiting volunteer junior coaches.
West Leeds RUFC, based at Blue Hill Lane, Wortley, is a successful and much-loved rugby union club that are on the prowl for new junior coaches.
Formed in 1926, the club has a history of nurturing talent, including rugby league star Mark Calderwood, who was a former junior player who returned as a senior player.
Volunteer coaches are given a warm welcome with coaching courses, DBS checks and kit provided.
Keir Breakwell, first team captain and coach of the under 9’s team, told WLD: “I’ve been at the club since I was six, my dad introduced me, he is still involved with the club today. I came through the juniors into the seniors and have won three national cups and three promotions.
“We are looking for anyone who is willing to get stuck in and has a passion for seeing the children thrive. Next season we will have the minis, under 9’s, 10’s, 12’s and 13’s with the opportunity to create a new under 7’s and 8’s section but we lack coaches and volunteers.”
West Leeds juniors usually play on a Sunday morning and some sections train through the week. Archie and Seth Ghent are currently playing in the juniors and are loving their time at the club: “We love that the club is local, it’s our home club. We are proud to play there and want to make it good for Leeds 12.
“The coaches work hard and put loads of effort into the training sessions and matches. They make it fun but still giving us the skills to play well”
Keir Breakwell could not hide his pride towards the club and its community values: “The club is a true family club and has given me the opportunity to make lifelong friends and unbelievable memories, such as playing at Twickenham three times.”
