A man had a lucky escape when a van he was in was crushed by a falling tree as Storm Malik hit the area with high winds.

Richard Nutter was getting changed in the back of the vehicle after cycling when the tree came down on top of it at the bottom of Calverley Cutting, Parkin Lane.

Mr Nutter told the BBC he was a “very lucky man” to have escaped with just cuts and bruises. A friend managed to pull him out of the van.

The Kirkstall Calverley Cutter 16k race was being held today. An eyewitness said there were lots of trees down, and the race had to be abandoned due to concerns from police.

There were also reports of large tree branches being brought down near the bridge on Pollard Lane, Bramley.

Storm Malik brought winds of up tom 80mph across the country today.
