Sky Fallers concert celebrates ten years of myth busting

Myth busting Leeds rock and pop band Sky Fallers will celebrate their tenth anniversary with a special concert as part of Leeds Learning Disability Week.

Sky Fallers feature highly talented learning disabled singers and musicians and were founded in 2015 through Kirkstall-based Aspire CBS, the city’s biggest care provider for adults with learning disabilities.

A spokesperson said: “Playing classic songs, they achieve great performance standards, break stereotypes and give audiences a lively show.”

Aspire realised that among the learning disability community were numerous individuals with exceptional musical talent and that it would be exciting to showcase those abilities, creating a band they could push to excellence.

Auditions were held and a core band of six members came together who set to work in rehearsal to play a repertoire of popular music on drums, keyboards, guitar, accordion, bass and vocalists.

Over the years some of the most talented learning disabled performers in Leeds have become members of the band.

They have performed on big stages at prestigious events, weekend festivals, open air concerts, clubs, pubs and community centres.

They average around 25 engagements a year. The learning disabled community find such inspiration in seeing people like themselves excel in Sky Fallers.

Sky Fallers also provide audience interaction for members of the community, making each performance a special experience and truly one of a kind.

The current band lineup features:

  • Des Thompson – vocals, drums and percussion
  • Jenni Robinson – vocals and ukulele
  • Megan Nunns – vocals, bass and keyboard
  • Steven Joynson – MC, vocals and keyboard
  • Two Aspire staff, bringing additional instrumentations and musical direction.

The concert at Headrow House will see the happy return of previous band members and feature guest performers from the community.
