Leeds West and Pudsey MP Rachel Reeves visited Pudsey Waterloo Primary School to meet pupils and staff.
During the visit, Ms Reeves toured the school and spoke to Year 3 pupils about their chess lessons.
As a keen chess player, Rachel wanted to hear about the children’s experience learning the game. The pupils told the Chancellor their weekly chess lessons had helped them to develop their sportsmanship and problem solving skills.

Ms Reeves also observed how the school was developing pupils’ speaking and listening skills.
She spoke to Year 5 pupils who are preparing for their upcoming Shakespeare performance of ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ at the Carriageworks Theatre in Leeds. Ms Reeves answered questions about her role as Chancellor and MP, as well as sharing advice on how the children can best prepare for public speaking.
Of the visit, Ms Reeves said: “I had a fantastic time visiting Pudsey Waterloo Primary School. It was a pleasure meeting the students and learning about the exciting chess and public speaking programmes the school offers.”
Helen Walker, Year 3 teacher at the school, said: “It has been such a pleasure hosting Rachel Reeves this afternoon. She was really interested in speaking to pupils about the opportunities they have at Pudsey Waterloo.
“The pupils have loved learning chess, and our weekly chess club is very popular. As well as this, we are excited to start work with the outdoor play and learning programme this year. Rich play opportunities are so important in developing children’s wellbeing and confidence.”
Pudsey Waterloo headteacher Dan White added: “We were really proud seeing how articulate the Year 5 pupils were when asking their questions towards their MP this afternoon.
“Speaking and listening is at the core of our curriculum and it’s great when we see pupils demonstrating these skills so confidently.”

Maybe the children can help her with her maths
Simon, you beat me too it.
I wonder if Rachal from accounts also taught them how to falsify a CV and how to treat old people with contempt and disdain.
Maybe they could teach you about spelling, respect and how to not be misogynistic
She isn’t Rachel from accounts so you can park the casual misogyny right there. She has a Degree in PPE from Oxford and a Masters in Economics from the LSE and worked at the British Embassy in Washington amongst other things. I invite Stephen and Simon commenting above to post their credentials here so we can compare and contrast with Rachel. I’ll wait!
Labour were calling Phillip Hammond “Spreadsheet Phill” back in Theresa May’s Tenure. Ita just a nickname. Typical hypocritical double standards from Labour, claiming theyre being “-ism’d” in a obviously see-through attempt to deflect rom the truly apocolyptic Political-Economy policies British Businesses in Yorkshire are suffering from due to an inept and financially-blind Labour Party Squatting the UK Government.
How is NIC increases a “plan for growth” ?? Pounds and pence in the spreadaheets of Businesses and in workers’ wallets arent being fattened by the current Chancellor
I can’t see why my comment is misogynistic.
I don’t see any reference to her gender as no pronouns were included.
Also It has been proven that she lied on her CV.
Would you have cried misandry if I was referring to a male politician.
Apologies for spelling her name incorrectly. If I’d written what 99% of the population probably call her, I’d be banned from the site
If you can’t see it then there is no hope, next you will be saying that most of your friends are women.
Most people embellish their CV’s, I am sure you have done this in your time. She is more than qualified for the role – try reading beyond the headlines.
To criticise someones ability and/or credentials is not misogynistic, its stating an opinion. Neither of us mentioned her sex until you showed up with ignorant assumptions.
The fact is she’s not doing a good job, she’s taxed (NI is a tax) everyone more & yet borrowing is way up, inflation is going to be heading up again, she’s useless irrespective of her sex.
I don’t need to post my CV/credentials as I’m not in the second most important role in the UK.
Neither Simon or Ste posted their own credentials despite coming on here and making snarky comments about the qualifications of our local MP and Chancellor of the Exchequer. We can draw our own conclusions from that.
Neither have you posted credentuals in defending her actions so far or do you honestly believe politicians should be immune from criticism if you don’t agree?
Yes I have – I’ve listed her qualifications in my first post above. If you mean my own qualifications – I have a degree in Political Science from the University of Leeds. The ball is back in your court.
Ball isn’t in my court on qualifications as I don’t beleive qualifications are need to make subjective comments on a public forum, I do however have BSc, work full time and no debt as I know about managing finances
If you think she is useless how would you rate her predecessors?
6 months is no time at all, things take time. A lot of damage has been done and it takes time to repair.
Short term pain for long term gain but you will still nitpick and hate regardless.
6 months of lies, growth down, inflation to be heading up, winter fuel payments removed, taxes (NI) up, IMF projections not good, borrowing up despite the increased taxes.
Same old Labour, lie to get in, borrow endlessly, get voted out and leave it for a party with a better grasp of fiscal policies to try balance the books which takes years after every Labour government.
Ah ok we found the problem, you don’t like Labour. Even if they succeed they will fail in your eyes, you will always find something to moan about.
Enjoy the next 4 years of moaning or use it to expand your mind and be less angry.
Snap, we also found your problem
You are correct, I don’t like them in general not because of their name or even their ideals but due to every Labour government being useless when it comes to a reasonable balance in terms of borrowing, debt & taxes plus this current gov in particullar as they also lied A LOT to get elected. They consistency leave the country worse off when booted out which will almost certainly be in 4 years time looking at polls.
I like everyone Simon (even you), I’m a lover, not a hater.
