Every year since her election in 2010, primary schools across West Leeds have been invited by local MP Rachel Reeves to enter her Christmas card competition.
Hundreds of entries are whittled down to a winner and two runners up, with the winning design featuring on the cards Rachel sends out – over 2,500 of them.
This year saw another strong field of entries, but finally a winner and two runners up were chosen from the host of designs sent in by the creative pupils in Leeds West.
The competition winner for 2023 was Riya from Beecroft Primary School in Kirkstall, and the runners up were Laila at Valley View Community Primary School, and Violet at Ryecroft Academy, Farnley.
“It was great to meet them in person and they should feel proud of their designs. It is always difficult to pick a winning entry and this year was no different. There were so many wonderful and festive designs that showcased the creative talent of our youngsters,” said Ms Reeves.
Rachel visited each of the winning pupils at their schools to congratulate them on their brilliant designs and to present each of them with a prize. Sadly Violet at Ryecroft had to go home ill so missed out on picking up her prize in person.
“To have such a significant local MP is so important, as a role model especially for girls who may aspire to have careers making a difference,” said headteacher Sarah Griggs, of Valley View Primary School.
