Protest set to oppose Abbey House Museum closure plans

Residents living in Kirkstall and beyond are set to come together tomorrow (Saturday) to oppose the closure of Abbey House Museum.

Leeds City Council is proposing to close Abbey House Museum in Kirkstall as it faces an unprecedented strain on its finances.

The proposal has led to a huge public ourtcry and a family-friendly public demonstration featuring banners is now scheduled to take place outside the museum tomorrow (Saturday) at 1pm.

The museum has posted on social media that it will remain open while the demonstration is being held.

A petition against the proposed closure is about to pass the 5,000-name mark andĀ a public consultation where people can submit their commentsĀ to the council remains open for another six days (January 23).

Latest figures show the council needs to save Ā£106.4m during 2025/26 to avoid having it declare itself bankrupt. The Abbey House Museum closure could save Ā£160,000.

The council faces rising costs in services including adult social care, while central Government support of local authorities has been insufficient over the past 15 years.
